Eric was shirtless, laying face down on his couch in the den, his back feeling as if he had just received the worse sunburn in his life. He had finally taken off the last remnants of his destroyed black shirt and his back was exposed, a raw, lobster pink, almost red and beginning to blister. In the hour that it took to drive to Salinas, the Alliance went over their plans again, Karen holding the blueprint of the lab she had drawn out from memory in her lap.

They exited off the freeway and drove down a road populated with large, drab buildings with architects that apparently didn't believe in windows. I have no idea what order I'm drawing these in.

Michael is a cheeky little bastard. I don't know what he's exactly thinking about right now, but I'm sure it's the impending misfortune of someone else.

Well, in terms of their first names, I seemed to name them whatever comes into my head (which explains why I have 3 "J" names in one story...because I didn't plan it out).

Actually, all of my characters originally started out with names because I didn't think about them too thoroughly when naming them (granted, this was nearly 10 years ago before I realized "Hey, names are important for fictional characters! Maybe you should think about this a little more"). For example, a number of my characters have had name changes when I realized their last names didn't reflect their ethnicity (Jace has gone from "Mitchell" to "Klein" to "Levin"; Michael from "Dunsten" to "Biagan"; Vanessa from "Turner" to "Macias" to "Delgado"). Jesse's name is actually a nod at a character named "Jesse Grass" in The Simpsons, but I feel like I really should change it because it's too close, but still haven't yet.

Laura and Rick have the last name of "Ravens" for reasons I don't remember other than "It sounded cool and slightly sinister." Even though nothing about them really brings to mind the image of “ravens,” so I might change their last name later too.

But again, that's because I made these characters long before I realized how impor-tant names were. Now I've spent so long associating them with the names they have, it seems a little too late to change them (their first names, anyway).

(My other story, Kumi, on the other hand? I spent a buttload of time re-searching each name on different databases--African names, Celtic names, Hawaiian names, etc.--because I learned my lesson this time around and tried to give them names that had meanings that fit most of their personalities.)
